The roof is then covered with felt underlayment, all precisely measured to overlap. A drip edge must also be nailed in an overlapping fashion at the end of the eaves. Particularly in Florida, where rain is often combined with heavy winds, such precautions are necessary to prevent shingle failure.

Only after the flashing and drip edge have been installed can professionals begin to add the shingles, moving in steady rows or “courses.” After the tabs have been cut off the shingles, the courses need to be applied within precise fractions of an inch.
